The Worst Valentine’s Date Ever

While vagabonding around the globe, my path is paved with cultural misunderstandings and language barriers. The following story is a good example.

This Valentine’s day, I arranged a date with a local Thai girl.

A couple of minutes too late, I arrive at the restaurant. Assuming that she already took a seat, I start looking for her.

There’s this group (2 girls, 1 guy) sitting at a table, staring at me. One of the girls looks like she’s waiting for somebody and looks kinda like my date. (I wasn’t 100% sure how she looks like because it’s been a couple of days since I met her.)

Not sure how to proceed (and not sure if this girl is actually my date), I ask the girl what her name is. “Nok”. Sounds like the name of the girl that I’m here to meet, at least to my Falang ears. This must be her.

I sit down. Nok seems to be extraordinarily nervous. And why did she bring her friends? Why the hell are they already eating even though I only came 5 minutes too late?

Whatever, I order a beer. In the meantime another guy joins the table.

I try to have a conversation, but nobody speaks any English and I don’t speak any Thai. What the fuck is going on? I remember that I talked to the girl in English the last time I saw her. Is she so nervous and shy that she’s scared to speak?

10-15 awkward minutes pass.

Suddenly my phone rings. My date is waiting outside the restaurant. Everything makes sense now.

I had to laugh pretty hard when I realized what was going on.
I’m currently in Mukdahan, Isaan, hanging out with Chris from MyEggNoodles.

Having a good time here for sure. Where are you at?
